Project Paridhi

Overview

A fun-filled hands on science project outdoors, measure sun shadows and find the circumference of the Earth accurately! Replicate what Eratosthenes, an ancient Greek astronomer did 3000 years back.

‘Project Paridhi’ is a flagship project of SPACE, to popularize hands on science, students find out the circumference of the Earth by taking measurements of the shadows made by the sun in a day, as done 3000 years back by astronomer Eratosthenes, who was able to measure it within 2% of the present accepted value. This project was initiated 8 years ago in 2010 with the intention to increase awareness amongst Indians that science can be done without any complicated equipment.

It is a showcase for proving that science can be best learnt by doing. It is open to all age groups and the public. It is typically conducted on days of Equinoxes and Solstices. ‘Project Paridhi’ is a science experimentation project by SPACE to popularize hands on science.

Description of Activity
This is hands on science activity which involves measuring the length of shadows cast by a vertical object (gnomon) as cast by the sun, to determine the local noon. Simple trigonometry leads to the calculation of the circumference using the measured sun angle. The activity replicates that done by Eratosthenes.

Learning Outcomes and Benefits to Schools
Participants learn basic concepts of science in a fun way with hands on science and use geometry and trigonometry. Some are trained as Earth Scientists and conduct the training, which hones leadership skills. Schools can host this for the neighbourhood to showcase their schools.

Current Programme

Celebrate Vernal Equinox with SPACE in 6 cities – Chennai, Dehradun, Delhi-NCR, Ludhiana, Meerut and Surat on March 20, 2018.

SPACE encourages everyone to join Project Paridhi – flagship project by SPACE to do the hands on science activity. Replicate Eratosthenes activity and calculate the circumference of the Earth using simple sun shadows measurements.

To do the same, SPACE is providing an opportunity in the upcoming celestial occurrence, Vernal Equinox, on March 20, 2018 to all schools and general public for a special conduction of our flagship programme ‘Project Paridhi’ where a large number of students will be able to participate, conducted by our Educators.

register

All Schools are welcome to register till registrations are closed by March 15, 2018 and participate to celebrate Vernal Equinox.

The Experiment

This project involves reading of shadows cast by a gnomon at local noon. This can be done at one location, or by a pair of teams at locations along the same longitude on the globe. For example, cities like New Delhi, Bangalore and Alma-ta in Kazakhstan fall almost with one degree of longitude and readings taken at the same time from these cities can tell us about the size and shape of the Earth. This experiment can be performed on any day but conduction on the special days of SOLSTICE AND EQUINOX is preferred, as the position of the sun on these days directly overhead on the Tropics of Capricorn or Cancer or the equator, makes the sun angle equal to or directly related to the latitude of the location. This makes the experiment easier to conduct and also helps in the understanding of solstice and equinox.

Student Earth Scientist

2015
Special teams of students, as nominated by the schools are trained in technical aspects and conduction of Project Paridhi from 15 different schools. They will further conduct the activity at each of their schools to enable a maximum number of students to participate in this activity. These students will form a team of trained ‘Student Earth Scientists’ who will assist SPACE in this conduction, and who may volunteer to help in further conductions and rest who did not qualify can help in assistance.

Achievements

Project Paridhi is a flagship programme of SPACE and has achieved many credits:

  • Launched in 2010, 5000 students and public from different parts of India have taken part in Project Paridhi.
  • Paridhi has been conducted at landmarks like Jantar Mantar, Qutab Minar and the sundial at Barapullah flyover and at locations in Chennai and Ludhiana.
  • It has been accredited in a report on ‘Astronomy in public places’ by French Professors, Mr. Prof Denis Savoie and Prof Bonnet Bidaud.
  • VIPs such as DG of Archaeological Survey of India and Deputy CM Delhi, Mr. Manish Sisodia have graced conductions and encouraged the students.
  • Earth’s circumference has been calculated to upto 99% accuracy in this project.
